Kathryn Bigelow is one of my favourite directors and her recent work The Hurt Locker is another exceptional film. Her short term marriage to James Cameron must have had some synergy because there are definitely some similarities between the two directing styles. There is a good post HERE
They both have a great ability to bring the viewer right into the heart of the film. This is especially noticeable in Avatar through the use of 3D technology but it’s more subtle in The Hurt Locker where it slowly tightens up the film as it progresses.
The other powerful thing about these directors is that they are able to make a long film and not let it drag. This is especially apparent in the two aforementioned films which do it with ease.
Cinema should be emersive in all forms but it does take a great director to really achieve this through leveraging the power of their crew.
